Desiya Murpoku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) announced a state-wide protest on July 25 against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government in Tamil Nadu. The protest will bring attention to issues like the hike in electricity tariffs, scarcity of essential items in the public distribution system, and the Karnataka government's non-compliance with the Cauvery water management authority's directives.
In a statement, the DMDK specified that demonstrations will occur in all districts of Tamil Nadu at 10 am. The grievances range from the recent rise in electricity charges to the unavailability of palm oil and pulses in ration shops over the past few months. The protest also addresses the Karnataka government's refusal to comply with the directives of the Cauvery water management authority. Meanwhile, AIADMK leader Sellur Raju criticized the DMK for increasing the electricity tariff, describing it as a "gift" to voters.
TANGEDCO had earlier cited financial losses as the reason for the increased tariffs. The company's financial struggles have significantly worsened over the past decade, forcing it to take substantial loans. AIADMK's Edappadi Palaniswami and BJP's Annamalai have also condemned the DMK-led government for these policies.
