Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced on Friday that 405 Indian students have been safely evacuated from Bangladesh amid increasing unrest in the country. The students were escorted through the Dawki Integrated Check Post.

In his statement, Sangma noted that many students from various parts of the world, including India, are studying in Bangladesh and have been affected by the unrest. Upon receiving information about the situation, immediate action was taken to evacuate the students. Of the 405 students, 80 are from Meghalaya, while the rest come from other parts of India. The operation also included the evacuation of students from Nepal, Bhutan, and some tourists.

Sangma emphasized that nodal officers in Meghalaya are in direct contact with the Indian Embassy in Dhaka and senior IPS officers are facilitating the movement. “One particular college, Eastern Medical College, has 36 Indian students stranded. We are in constant touch with officials to ensure their safety,” he said. The Chief Minister added that the situation is being closely monitored and that safety measures are in place to ensure secure routes for evacuation.

Parents are understandably concerned, but Sangma assured that all possible efforts are being made for the safe return of their children. He added, “We have made arrangements in Dawki, including medical attention, food, transportation, and security.” The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also advised Indian nationals in Bangladesh to adhere to the advisory issued by the High Commission of India in Dhaka.
