Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal conducted an inspection of the drainage and sewerage system in Dibrugarh City, Assam, on Saturday. Sonowal, who also serves as the Lok Sabha MP for Dibrugarh, called for collective efforts to devise an effective solution to the poorly designed drainage system that causes artificial floods.

Highlighting the role of academic institutions, Sonowal stated that IIT Guwahati will investigate the causes of artificial flooding in Dibrugarh, aiming to develop a comprehensive masterplan. 'The recurring artificial floods in Dibrugarh are alarming. We must prioritize finding a sustainable, economically prudent solution. IIT Guwahati will identify the underlying issues and formulate a masterplan for governmental action,' he said.

Sonowal also emphasized tackling encroachment, identifying it as a major cause of flooding. He urged civic bodies to enforce laws against encroachment and expedite efforts for a permanent resolution. Post-inspection, he directed officials to act promptly and incorporate expert suggestions into their strategy to alleviate the public's concerns effectively.
