Indonesian rescuers are intensifying their search for a missing cargo ship carrying 12 individuals and vital telecommunications equipment off the easternmost Papua region. According to officials, the ship vanished last week.

The vessel embarked on its journey from Timika to the highlands of Yahukimo last week Monday, aiming to set up critical communications infrastructure. However, two days into the voyage, communications with the ship ceased, revealed Fadhilah Mathar from the communications ministry.

The search, which began on Saturday, involves 150 personnel and two navy ships, announced I Wayan Suyatna, the head of the local rescue team. The cause of the disappearance is yet to be determined.
