India's Ambitious Union Budget: A Surge in Capital Investment Across Sectors
The upcoming Union Budget, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, is expected to focus on significantly expanding capital investment across various sectors like infrastructure, green energy, and defence. With an anticipated growth target of over 7.5%, substantial allocations and incentives for private sector participation will fuel economic growth.

The forthcoming Union Budget will likely concentrate on expanding capital investment across multiple sectors, including infrastructure, construction, manufacturing, and green energy, according to a finance professor from a leading business school. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present the Union Budget in Parliament on Tuesday.
“India will grow at a faster rate because the government's entire focus is on promoting capital expenditure,” stated Dr. Trilochan Tripathy, Professor of Finance at XLRI, who noted the expectation of a near 50% growth in overall capital expenditure for the fiscal year 2024-25.
The finance minister is anticipated to set an optimistic growth target of over 7.5%, surpassing the latest forecasts of 7% by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). A broad-based resource allocation is necessary to achieve this, Tripathy emphasized, especially in infrastructure, green sustainable energy, and defence.
Moreover, policies encouraging private sector participation are expected. According to Tripathy, the government might offer tax incentives to bolster investment in defence sectors, while the focus will also be on emerging areas like green hydrogen, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence to achieve economic and environmental goals.
“Investments in these areas will foster economic growth and drive innovation, alongside achieving India’s net zero emission target by 2070,” Tripathy concluded.
A comprehensive agricultural policy to make India self-reliant in foodgrain production might also be introduced, he added.
