Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Swati Maliwal on Monday requested the suspension of business in the Rajya Sabha to discuss the tragic deaths of three UPSC aspirants and called for justice and compensation for the victims' families. The aspirants lost their lives on Saturday, July 27, when their coaching center in West Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar was flooded.
'I have filed notice today for suspension of business of Rajya Sabha under Rule 267 for discussion on the pertinent issue before the nation - justice and compensation for the four UPSC aspirants who have died in Patel Nagar and Rajinder Nagar. Voice of the students will not go unheard,' said Maliwal. Simultaneously, Delhi BJP workers demonstrated against the AAP government over the Old Rajinder Nagar incident.
Earlier, a public interest litigation (PIL) was submitted to the Delhi High Court seeking a high-level investigation into the Rajinder Nagar incident. The PIL also requested an inquiry into the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officers accused of neglecting a complaint about the building's condition filed on June 26, 2024.
The petition further called for the establishment of district-level committees to investigate illegal commercial constructions in each district of Delhi. In connection with the incident, Delhi Police apprehended the owner and coordinator of the coaching center, charging them with culpable homicide and other offenses.
Yesterday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi sealed seven properties and three basements in Karol Bagh Zone for violating building by-laws. This tragedy has spurred student protests and demands for government action against illegal basements, while a political blame game unfolds among different parties.
