IMD Predicts Thunderstorms Across Andhra Pradesh: Prepare for Strong Winds and Moderate Rainfall

The Indian Meteorological Department forecasts thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Andhra Pradesh from August 1-5, with strong winds up to 40 km/h. IMD Predicts Thunderstorms Across Andhra Pradesh: Prepare for Strong Winds and Moderate Rainfall

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in parts of Andhra Pradesh from August 1 to August 5. Areas likely to be affected include North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP), Yanam, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP), and Rayalaseema, which could experience winds up to 40 km per hour over the next five days.

Stella Samul, Director of the Amaravati Meteorological Centre, highlighted a tilt in the shear zone located at approximately 20°N between 4.5 and 5.8 km above mean sea level. This zone has now become less marked, while lower tropospheric Westerly winds prevail over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. The Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has also predicted moderate rain with scattered thundershowers in the eastern parts of Andhra Pradesh.

APSDMA has indicated that moderate rain and scattered thundershowers are likely in districts including Srikakulam, Manyam, Alluri, Kakinada, Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Prakasam, Nellore, Nandyala, Anantapuram, Annamaiya, Chittoor, and Tirupati. The IMD has also issued a warning for moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the South Peninsular region.

The IMD's press release added that the South Peninsular region, including Coastal Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Kerala & Mahe, will experience widespread light to moderate rainfall. Interior Karnataka will see scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, while Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana, and Rayalaseema can expect isolated to scattered rainfall over the next five days.
