A medical college in Wayanad has become a crucial sanctuary for victims of the recent landslides, offering not only physical care but also mental support. Dr. Zeba Moopen, Trustee of Moopens Medical College and Director at Aster DM Healthcare, emphasized the need for comprehensive assistance to help patients recover from the trauma.

'It has been a catastrophe and is unfortunate. Three staff members are missing, and we've recovered the body of one. Sixteen of our staff have lost their homes. We have treated 176 landslide patients, of which 11 are in the Intensive Care Unit,' stated Dr. Moopen.

The hospital has been treating the injured free of cost. 'It is our responsibility to help our people as much as possible. Every one of our staff was at the forefront, doing what we had to do. Currently, we have 70 patients remaining, with three in critical condition. Though many have been discharged, much work remains,' she added.

Dr. Moopen also highlighted the importance of addressing mental trauma. 'People have lost everything, including family members. Some have been left completely alone. Our psychiatry team is providing counseling and we will be part of the comprehensive rebuilding effort,' she explained. The landslides, which struck Mundakkai and Churalmala on July 30, have claimed over 200 lives. The Kerala Revenue Department reports that many individuals are still missing.
