Fishermen associations in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, initiated an indefinite strike on Saturday following the death of a fisherman caused by a collision with a Sri Lankan Navy vessel, which occurred 5 nautical miles north of Katchatheevu Island. A meeting held the previous day led to the decision to strike.
Sri Lanka handed over the deceased fisherman's body to the Indian Navy at sea on Friday night and also released two apprehended fishermen. The Indian Navy ship, INS Bitra, coordinated with a Sri Lankan Navy vessel to receive the deceased and the fishermen at sea before proceeding to Rameswaram. The Indian Navy then collaborated with local authorities to transfer the mortal remains and the released fishermen.
On Thursday, the Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, where a strong protest was registered over the fisherman's death. The incident involved a collision between a Sri Lankan naval vessel and an Indian fishing boat, resulting in one fisherman's death, another missing, and two others rescued.
The deceased, K Malaisamy, tragically lost his life while Mookhaiyya and Muthu Muniandi were rescued with minor injuries. The Indian Consulate in Jaffna provided immediate assistance to the affected fishermen and their families. The Indian government emphasized its commitment to the safety and security of its fishermen and has consistently raised related issues with Sri Lanka at the highest levels.
Additionally, on July 23, the Sri Lankan Navy apprehended nine fishermen from Rameswaram. Earlier, on July 19, a protest was held in Rameswaram against frequent arrests by the Sri Lankan Navy, demanding the release of 74 detained fishermen this year.
