Nalbari district in Assam has rolled out a groundbreaking initiative to empower rural women like Akhari Bodo through Eri silkworm rearing. Previously constrained by limited infrastructure, Akhari now boasts a proper shed, enabling her to rear multiple crops annually and significantly enhance her income.
District Commissioner Varnali Deka explained that the initiative focuses on creating sustainable livelihood models by integrating various government welfare schemes. The effort has enabled women to engage in commercial Eri rearing while managing household responsibilities.
The program has not only achieved self-sufficiency in Eri seed production but also expanded market reach through expos and e-commerce platforms. The administration has strategically developed infrastructure and plantations, resulting in better economic opportunities and a greener environment.
