The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has assumed control over the investigation into the deaths of three UPSC aspirants, who tragically drowned in a basement at a coaching center in Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar. This move comes after the Delhi High Court flagged serious flaws in the Delhi Police's investigation and raised concerns over potential corruption by public servants.
The CBI's investigation currently names only one accused: Abhishek Gupta, co-owner and CEO of Rau Coaching Centre, who had leased the building. Charges against Gupta include culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing death by negligence, and negligent conduct regarding building maintenance. These charges are detailed under sections 105/106(1)/115(2)/290/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The case was registered by taking over an FIR from the Rajinder Nagar police station dated July 28, 2024.
The Delhi High Court's decision to transfer the investigation to the CBI underscores the gravity of the incidents and the possible involvement of public servant corruption. Additionally, the court has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to ensure that drains are functional and to increase their capacity if necessary, while also ordering the removal of illegal constructions impeding stormwater drains.
