In a significant move, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced on Thursday that wrestler Vinesh Phogat will receive all the benefits of a silver medalist, despite her recent disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024. 'Not just Haryana, but the whole country is proud of our daughter Vinesh. Despite everything, we will reward her with all the benefits that a silver medalist is entitled to. How can we let her morale down,' Saini said during a press conference in Chandigarh.
Phogat faced disqualification on Wednesday from the 50 kg women's wrestling event after surpassing the weight limit. She was set to compete against the United States' Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the Gold Medal match. The Indian Olympic contingent issued a statement confirming that Phogat tipped the scales above the 50 kg mark. This disqualification came after she defeated Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals. Criticizing the opposition, Saini said, 'The central government is taking steps to boost the morale of our sportspersons.'
CM Saini also mentioned that he invited bronze medalists Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh to his residence. He accused the opposition of politicizing sports-related issues and highlighted the government's support for athletes. Additionally, he announced job security for contractual workers with the state government, benefiting 1,20,000 employees. A new ordinance ensures their services are safeguarded until retirement, and their salary and benefits are aligned with permanent employees.
In another decision, the state cabinet approved bonuses for farmers growing Kharif crops due to inadequate rainfall in May, June, and July. 'A bonus of Rs 2,000 per acre will be provided for the current Kharif crops,' Saini stated. He emphasized that he understands the plight of farmers as he himself is a farmer's son. Furthermore, he announced that journalist pensions would now be applicable to both spouses in a family if they are journalists.
