Himachal Pradesh has ended the facility of free water supply for rural households earning above Rs 50,000 annually, officials confirmed on Thursday. These households will now be required to pay Rs 100 per month.

Additionally, commercial establishments such as hotels and home-stays will be billed based on water consumption per kilolitre. This move is aimed at increasing revenue and reducing subsidies, as outlined by the State Cabinet.

While underprivileged sections, including widows, destitute, single women, handicapped individuals, and other weaker sections, will continue to receive water free of cost, the revenue collected will be utilized to enhance the quality of drinking water, according to State authorities. This policy change comes after previous provisions led to significant revenue losses for the Jan Shakti Department.
