IIT Madras Tops NIRF Rankings for Sixth Consecutive Year

IIT Madras has maintained its top position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, marking the sixth consecutive year at the pinnacle. Announced by the Ministry of Education, the NIRF also highlighted IISc Bengaluru as the best university. The ranking evaluates institutions across 16 categories.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has cemented its position at the pinnacle of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 for the sixth consecutive year. The Ministry of Education unveiled the rankings on Monday.

Maintaining its status, IIT Madras was recognized as the top engineering college for the past nine years. Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, emerged as the best university. In the management category, IIMs in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta ranked among the top five. This year, three new categories were added to the framework, rounding it to 16 categories.

Overall, the NIRF now evaluates higher educational institutes in 16 categories, including universities, medical, engineering, management, law, architecture, research, pharmacy, dental, agriculture, innovation, state universities, open universities, and skill universities. This year saw 10,885 institutions participating. Introduced in 2015, the NIRF is a ranking methodology developed by the Ministry of Education's Core Committee to rank Indian higher educational institutions.
