Nationwide Protests by Junior Doctors Demand Justice for Trainee Doctor's Tragic Death

Junior doctors and medical students at AIIMS Mangalagiri staged a protest following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. They called for CBI investigation and a Central Protection Act for healthcare workers. Protests have spread to AIIMS Delhi, Chandigarh PGIMER, and Amritsar's Government Medical College.

Junior doctors and medical students at AIIMS Mangalagiri in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district staged a protest on Friday in response to the nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The medical students also performed a street play to mark their protest.

Senior Resident Doctor at AIIMS Mangalagiri, Dr. Sreeja, called for a transparent investigation by the CBI. 'On the eve of Independence Day, protesting doctors at RG Kar faced mob attacks and police brutality. The hospital was vandalized, and evidence was erased. In condemnation, we are protesting here. This is not just a crime against doctors; it's a crime against women and humanity. We request a transparent CBI investigation. The victim's family should receive adequate compensation. We also demand a Central Protection Act for all healthcare workers,' she stated.

Doctors and medical students at AIIMS Delhi earlier demanded a Central Protection Act for healthcare workers. AIIMS Delhi doctor Kumar Kartikay affirmed their resolve, stating they will not step back until assured action will be taken. Medical professionals at Chandigarh PGIMER also continued their demonstration on Friday, vowing to persist until justice is served.

The Resident Doctors Association at the Government Medical College in Amritsar, Punjab, has announced the suspension of all non-essential and elective hospital services, including Out Patient Departments, operating theatres, and wards, starting from August 16 and extending until further notice. A post-graduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and killed in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The CBI has taken over the case, and an investigation is ongoing. The opposition BJP has accused the ruling TMC of a 'cover-up' in the matter.
