Around 500 students, teachers, and staff of Presidency University took to the streets in a 3km rally on Friday demanding justice for a postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at R G Kar Hospital. The rally spanned from the university's main campus on College Street to Shyambazar.
Protesters, predominantly led by women students, chanted slogans for the arrest of the perpetrators, expedited punishment, and the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for not ensuring women's workplace safety. Participant Bitan Islam disclosed the protest's details to PTI.
''We are pleased with the support from several teachers and university staff, along with students from other institutions,'' Islam said.
Marchers, some carrying flaming torches, recited poems, causing a two-hour traffic disruption on College Street-Bidhan Sarani.
Separately, St. Xavier's College (Calcutta) Alumni Association held a silent candlelight march on Park Street, showing solidarity with the victim and her family while demanding justice.
