Advocate Challenges Lok Sabha Membership of Amritpal Singh

Advocate Chandresh Jain has filed a petition before the President of India contesting the Lok Sabha membership of Amritpal Singh. This action follows the dismissal of a similar petition by the Supreme Court. Jain contends that Singh’s nomination and election are unconstitutional and seeks legislative changes to prevent such cases.

Advocate Chandresh Jain has lodged a petition with the President of India, challenging the Lok Sabha membership of Amritpal Singh. Jain also provided a copy of the petition to the Election Commission of India. Singh won the Lok Sabha election from Khadoor Sahib constituency in Punjab in 2024.

The Supreme Court had dismissed a similar petition by Jain on August 9. The court stated, ‘We are not inclined to entertain this petition. The writ petition is, accordingly, dismissed.’

Jain is now urging the President to instruct the Election Commission to declare Singh’s membership null, arguing that the oath taken by Singh and the scrutiny of his nomination papers were flawed and unconstitutional. Jain believes this issue is critical for India’s sovereignty, unity, and democratic framework.

The petition also questions whether individuals challenging India's sovereignty should be allowed to contest elections. Singh, who was earlier arrested for staging a protest and making pro-Khalistan statements, was elected in 2024 and recently took his oath as a Lok Sabha member while on parole.
