Doctors from Lady Hardinge Medical College and members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) staged a protest on Saturday in response to the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr Prakash Lalchandani, state secretary of the IMA, emphasized the necessity of a democratic protest to secure justice for healthcare professionals.
'The democratic protest that we are holding is our duty to ensure that the doctors of the country are served justice. No doctor wants to hold a protest. The government needs to take a step to meet our demands,' Lalchandani stated. Another protestor highlighted the grim reality of doctors needing to protest for their workplace safety, warning that further actions would be necessary if their demands were ignored.
'It is a very horrible situation in the country today that doctors have to step down for a protest to ensure their safety. We, doctors, are still running our services, and despite this, if our demands are not met, we will have to take further necessary steps. We are not demanding anything big; we are just demanding safety at our workplaces,' the protestor said. The protest led to a dramatic impact at AIIMS Delhi, with more than a 90% reduction in admissions, OPDs, and operation theatres, though emergency services and ICUs remained operational, according to a status report from Dr Nirupam Madaan, Medical Superintendent of AIIMS, Delhi.
