On the morning of August 15, 72-year-old Kavita Rajkumar Goel was found unconscious at her residence. Her family rushed her to HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka, where she was resuscitated and placed on a ventilator. An urgent CT scan revealed a massive brain hemorrhage, and despite intensive care, she was declared brain dead.
The family was counseled for organ donation, and with their consent, Goel's kidneys, corneas, and skin were donated. Her kidneys were allocated through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO): one to a 52-year-old woman at HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka, and the other to a 63-year-old man at Artemis Hospital.
Dr. Shrikanth Srinivasan and Dr. (Col) Avnish Seth praised the family's decision, while Viji Varghese emphasized the importance of organ donation. India faces a significant disparity between transplant needs and the availability of organs, highlighting the urgent need for more donors to bridge this gap and save lives.
