Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has called an emergency meeting following a letter from former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, urging immediate action in the Kolkata RG Kar Medical College rape-death case. Bose plans to brief various sections of Bengal society on the actions taken and gather their feedback.
Taking to social media platform X, Governor Bose affirmed he had swiftly acted on Singh's letter, expressing his solidarity with civil society's concerns. He announced plans to apprise society of the measures adopted and seek their opinions on the issue.
Harbhajan Singh had earlier expressed his deep anguish over the delay in justice for the victim. Singh urged CM Mamata Banerjee and Governor Bose for swift, decisive action, stating that women's safety and dignity are non-negotiable and perpetrators must face exemplary punishment to restore faith in the system.
The tragic incident occurred on August 9, when a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College. The case has sparked nationwide protests. In response to vandalism at the protest site, Kolkata police have imposed Section 163 of the BNSS around the hospital, effective August 18.
