Political Row Erupts After Trainee Doctor's Murder in Kolkata

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Kumar Jha has slammed West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose for his recent comments on the murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Governor Bose, earlier today, criticized the Mamata Banerjee government, claiming it has 'failed' the state's women. Responding to this, Jha questioned if such incidents were exclusive to Bengal, suggesting that the Governor is damaging the dignity of his position. Jha contended that while expressing sympathy is warranted, turning the issue into a political attack is not. He urged the Governor to avoid one-sided criticism and politicization of such heinous crimes.

On Monday, Governor Bose met with women leaders and doctors at Raj Bhavan during Raksha Bandhan, assuring them he stands with them in making West Bengal safer for women. He asserted that democracy in the state was degenerating, pledging to protect women and urging societal reform for their safety and happiness.

The incident in question occurred on August 9, when a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty. The event sparked nationwide protests from the medical community. On August 14, protests at RG Kar Medical College were disrupted by a mob, leading to police intervention. Kolkata police have since implemented Section 163 of the BNSS around the hospital to maintain law and order until August 25.
