The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed all social media platforms and electronic media to immediately remove the name, photographs, and video clips of the deceased in the RG Kar Hospital case. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, issued the order following the publication of the victim's identity on multiple platforms.
The court felt compelled to issue the directive due to the unauthorized dissemination of the deceased's identity and images after the recovery of the body. 'We accordingly direct that all references to the name of the deceased, photographs, and video clips shall be removed forthwith from all social media platforms and electronic media in compliance with this order,' stated the bench.
The directive came in response to a petition highlighting the circulation of images and videos of the victim after an incident involving murder and alleged rape at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Calcutta. The petition raised concerns over the widespread sharing of the deceased's identity and related hashtags on electronic and social media platforms.
