Major Developments in RG Kar Medical College Murder and Rape Case

The Sealdah Court has ordered a 14-day judicial custody for Sanjay Roy, accused in the RG Kar Medical College case. The CBI is also authorized to conduct a polygraph test on Dr. Sandip Ghosh and others, while the Calcutta High Court hands over financial irregularities investigation to the CBI.

In the latest developments surrounding the murder and rape case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Sealdah Court has remanded the main accused, Sanjay Roy, to 14 days of judicial custody, extending until September 6, 2024. Roy is accused in the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the institution.

In a further twist, the Calcutta High Court has granted the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) permission to conduct a polygraph test on Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with five other individuals connected to the case. These include four doctors and one civic volunteer who were present with the victim on the day of the incident.

Additionally, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation of financial irregularities involving Dr. Ghosh to the CBI, previously managed by a Special Investigation Team (SIT). This decision arose from a petition filed by Dr. Akhtar Ali, alleging financial misconduct and unethical practices by Dr. Ghosh. The Court has ordered the SIT to transfer all investigation documents to the CBI by Saturday morning, with the CBI required to present a progress report on September 17.

The verdict was welcomed by political figures, including Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar and BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay, both criticising attempts to suppress evidence. A delegation of junior doctors from RG Kar Medical College was summoned by CBI officers, while protests by BJP workers continued in Kolkata and Siliguri.

The deployment of CISF personnel at the College, ordered by the Supreme Court, has heightened security in response to ongoing protests. Simultaneously, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to establish fast-track courts for handling sensitive cases.
