The Ministry of Education has mandated all States and Union Territories to implement the 'Guidelines on School Safety and Security-2021' aimed at protecting children in educational institutions. This initiative comes after directives from the Supreme Court following Writ Petitions filed in 2017.
Aligned with the POCSO Act, the guidelines establish accountability for school management in both Government and Private Schools. They cover preventive education, reporting procedures, and the creation of a conducive learning environment. States and UTs are required to report the status of these guidelines' implementation.
Although advisory, the guidelines stress a 'Zero Tolerance Policy' towards negligence and aim to foster a safe school environment. They empower stakeholders by clarifying their roles and responsibilities in ensuring child safety, both within school premises and during transportation. The guidelines seek to raise awareness and understanding about the need for collaborative efforts in safeguarding children.
