In a significant development, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Assam Cabinet has approved 57 of 67 recommendations put forth by the Justice (retd) Biplab Sarma Commission concerning Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. CM Sarma highlighted this as a critical step in safeguarding the rights of Assam's citizens since Independence.

Clause 6 of the Assam Accord mandates the protection, preservation, and promotion of Assamese people's cultural, social, and linguistic identity through various constitutional, legislative, and administrative measures. The Chief Minister, in a post on X, detailed the key decisions taken by the cabinet to implement these recommendations fully.

The approved recommendations will be applicable throughout the state, with exceptions in the 6th schedule areas and Barak Valley, where implementation will require the agreement of local authorities and communities. The cabinet plans in-depth talks with the Government of India concerning the remaining recommendations.

Additionally, the Cabinet has decided to form a Group of Ministers to collaborate with the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and other bodies to formulate a comprehensive roadmap. The aim is to implement the recommendations by April 15, 2025. (ANI)
