In a recent political skirmish, Congress leader Pawan Khera defended party president Mallikarjun Kharge's controversial remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Khera asserted that the party 'does not hate PM Modi but loves the country,' a statement made in response to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's criticism.

Amit Shah had accused Kharge of making 'distasteful and disgraceful' comments during a rally in Jammu and Kashmir, in which Kharge mentioned he would stay alive until Modi was removed from power. Shah's remarks came as J&K headed into the final phase of assembly polls.

Speaking to ANI, Khera argued that a significant portion of the electorate, around 67%, did not vote for Modi and that Congress’s ultimate aim is to free the nation from Modi's ideology. The controversy arose after Kharge fell ill and resumed his speech, assuring the audience of his good health in Kathua.
