The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has fully endorsed the elevation of Udhayanidhi Stalin to the post of Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister, citing his extensive experience as a significant factor. DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan confirmed the decision on Monday, stating, 'He has gained experience, performed very well in his ministry, and is accepted by the party and all senior leaders. There is nothing wrong with it.'
Elangovan emphasized that senior party members and ministerial colleagues had been insisting on a larger official role for Udhayanidhi within the government. The move has received support from DMK allies, including Congress and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). Congress leader K. Selvaperunthagai noted, 'Many leaders in the BJP also have their sons and daughters serving as MLAs and MPs.' VCK Founder-President Thol. Thirumavalavan likewise expressed support, saying, 'He will carry out his duties under the guidance of our Chief Minister. He is a capable individual and has performed well in his previous portfolio. We welcome his elevation.'
On Saturday, Tamil Nadu Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin was officially appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister. Besides retaining the Sports Ministry, he has also been given the Planning and Development portfolio. This marks the first instance in Tamil Nadu's history, and only the third in India, where a father-son duo holds the positions of CM and Deputy CM, following the Badals in Punjab.
The appointment comes shortly after Chief Minister MK Stalin recommended to Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi to designate Udhayanidhi for the Planning and Development portfolio along with his existing responsibilities. In a related development, former Transport Minister Senthil Balaji was re-inducted into the cabinet just two days after securing bail in a money laundering case. Commenting on Senthil Balaji's situation, TKS Elangovan stated, 'ED and CBI have taken up a case already disposed of by the Chennai High Court. We believe it's an attempt by the BJP to undermine DMK's chances in the Western belt. However, no district in Tamil Nadu is favorable to them.'
