Crisis Deepens as Abu Dhabi Fund Writes Off Stake in Thames Water

The Financial Times reports that the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (Adia), a key shareholder in Thames Water, has written off its 9.9% stake in the troubled utility. The write-off, citing regulatory and operational challenges, reduces its share value to just 1 pound from 263 million pounds.

Thames Water, which provides services to 16 million people around London, is grappling with significant problems including sewage issues, deteriorating infrastructure, and mounting debts. Amid this financial turmoil, credit rating agencies have downgraded its rating, heightening fears of a potential default.

This financial upset comes ahead of UK finance minister Rachel Reeves' budget announcement, in which business leaders hope for measures to boost investor confidence. In the absence of a rescue plan, the UK government might be forced to place Thames Water under special administration.
