Historic Verdict Awaited in 33-Year Gyanvapi Mosque Case

The verdict on the long-standing Varanasi Gyanvapi mosque case is set for October 25. The 33-year-old legal battle, involving the construction of a temple and Hindu worship rights at the site, concludes following arguments from both Hindu and Muslim sides. The decision comes after extensive legal deliberations.

The verdict on the Varanasi Gyanvapi mosque, a site embroiled in legal battles for 33 years, will be pronounced on October 25. This case, involving Lord Visheshwar and the Anjuman Intezamiya Masjid Committee, revolves around the contentious issue of allowing Hindu worship and temple construction within the Gyanvapi premises.

In the decade-spanning legal proceedings, arguments from the Muslim side have concluded, with representation by the Anjuman Intezamiya Committee and the Waqf Board. They presented their arguments in the 1991 case concerning the Gyanvapi complex, following which the Hindu side submitted several legal precedents from the High Court and Supreme Court.

The case, initiated over the construction of a new temple and worship rights for Hindus, comes to a significant juncture as both sides finalise their submissions. The lawyer for the Hindu plaintiffs, Vijay Shankar Rastogi, mentioned that cross-examination by the Archaeological Survey of India has been completed, a move contested by the Muslim side in early October.
