In the aftermath of Russian missile attacks on its gas production facilities, Ukraine is set to increase its gas imports by 10% to nearly 25 million cubic meters on Thursday. The hike in imports, facilitated by transactions with Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland, underscores a strategic shift in Ukraine's energy procurement.
Starting in February, Ukraine has significantly ramped up its gas import volumes. A senior Ukrainian energy official highlighted the urgency of securing more natural gas, appealing to Ukraine's allies for assistance amidst tightening energy supplies.
As winter temperatures plunge to minus 10 degrees Celsius, Ukraine's daily gas consumption may reach 150 million cubic meters, intensifying the need for additional imports. Meanwhile, President Zelenskiy's remarks suggest the potential storage of liquefied natural gas from the U.S. in Ukraine's underground facilities.
