In a strategic move to safeguard the interests of farmers, the Indian government announced it will stop the duty-free import of yellow peas beyond February. This policy shift, outlined by Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, aims to prioritize domestic agricultural production.

The suspension follows a series of temporary duty-free imports implemented to stabilize market prices amidst supply shortages. The decision is set to be finalized by a Group of Ministers headed by Union Minister Amit Shah, marking a substantial shift toward bolstering local farming economics and reducing reliance on imports.

Industry experts, including India Pulses and Grain Association Chairman Bimal Kothari, foresee potential import restrictions with a possible 15-20% duty imposition. The emphasis remains on achieving self-reliance in pulses production by 2027, with strategic measures to enhance yield and implement innovative agricultural technologies.
