The Assam Director General of Police, Harmeet Singh, has disclosed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has registered a case against Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, a Pakistani national, under sections 48, 152, 61, and 197(1) of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita, along with section 13(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Singh stated that the case was filed following directives from the Assam cabinet.

Addressing the media, DGP Singh emphasized the threat posed by Sheikh's alleged activities against national security. The CID is tasked with probing whether other individuals are implicated alongside Sheikh and examining possible impacts on India's integrity, notably within the Assam region.

The case, which follows a state cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, also highlights concerns about Sheikh's connections with Elizabeth Gogoi, who has reportedly worked with international climate groups alongside Sheikh. Meanwhile, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has criticized the state's political handling of the situation, alleging fear-driven actions by Assam's leadership.
