India Elevates Barytes, Felspar, Mica, and Quartz to Major Minerals

The Indian government announced on Friday that barytes, felspar, mica, and quartz have been elevated to the status of major minerals. This reclassification aims to spur scientific exploration needed for critical minerals vital in emerging technologies.

The reclassification is part of the National Critical Mineral Mission, reflecting the government's commitment to fostering domestic mining. These minerals, essential in sectors such as energy transition and healthcare, were previously categorized as minor minerals.

With the new classification, lease terms for these minerals extend to 50 years, enhancing regulatory frameworks and industry stability. Registration with the Indian Bureau of Mines is required by June 30 to comply with the new mandates.
