The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has revamped the investor charter for stock brokers with the intent of enhancing consumer protection within the financial sector. This move aims to bolster financial inclusion, educate investors, and address recent changes in the securities market.
In light of these recent developments, such as the introduction of an Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform and the rollout of SCORES 2.0, a centralized web-based grievance system, SEBI’s updated charter now incorporates a comprehensive vision and mission for serving investors. The document details the roles brokers play, along with prescribed timelines for their activities. It also outlines critical investor Dos and Don'ts, and procedures for handling claims in the event of a broker default.
SEBI has mandated that all brokers prominently disclose the investor charter on their websites, at office locations, and include it in the account opening kits provided to clients. Furthermore, brokers are required to update their websites monthly with data on received complaints and their resolutions, ensuring transparency and accountability.
