In an unprecedented move, nearly 90,000 inmates housed in 75 prisons across Uttar Pradesh were offered the chance to participate in the Mahakumbh by bathing in water from the sacred Triveni Sangam, brought into the jails by officials. This gesture marks a significant step in spiritual inclusion within the prison system.
Uttar Pradesh's Minister of Prisons, Dara Singh Chauhan, highlighted that this initiative is unique to the state. He acknowledged that while people outside have the freedom to visit the holy sites, inmates remain confined yet still hold strong faith. The government, along with prison officers, facilitated the event to honor the inmates' religious beliefs.
Prisoners themselves expressed a desire to participate in the sacred ritual, hoping to become 'full partners' of Sanatan. Visuals from Aligarh jail captured inmates carrying vessels of the holy water to be used for the bath. Superintendent Brijendra Singh Yadav confirmed that inmates of various religions eagerly participated, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the event. In Ayodhya, 757 prisoners took part, intending to purify their minds through this ritual.
