Diplomatic Tensions Rise Over Student's Tragic Death at KIIT

The National Human Rights Commission of Nepal has requested its Indian counterpart to investigate the alleged suicide of a Nepalese student at Kalinga Institute and ensure justice. The incident, marked by subsequent attacks on Nepalese students, has prompted diplomatic interventions from Nepal at various governmental levels.

The National Human Rights Commission of Nepal has called on its Indian equivalent to investigate the suspicious death of a 20-year-old student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), India, urging them to ensure justice. The student's death, presumed to be suicide, has sparked protests and escalated into diplomatic conversations between Nepal and India.

The deceased, Prakriti Lamsal, was a B Tech student from Kathmandu. Her death and resultant protests by Nepalese students at KIIT led to alleged assaults and the eviction of these students. This prompted the Nepalese government to request a thorough investigation and guarantee Nepalese students' safety, demanding accountability from KIIT officials and implicated individuals.

Nepal's Foreign Minister, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, has intervened diplomatically, reaching out to Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi for remedial actions. Meanwhile, Nepal's Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli dispatched officials to closely monitor the situation, as the Institute faces accusations of human rights violations affecting Nepal-India relations.
