Eli Lilly Introduces Discounted Vial Versions of Zepbound to Boost Demand
Eli Lilly now offers higher doses of its weight-loss drug Zepbound in vial form at a discount to the injector pen versions. This move aims to increase demand amid pressure from investors and competition from Novo Nordisk's Wegovy, especially as compounding pharmacies face restrictions.
Eli Lilly announced on Tuesday that it has started selling higher doses of its weight-loss medication, Zepbound, in vials in the U.S. at a $150 discount compared to the injector pen versions. This strategic pricing is aimed at increasing demand for the drug.
Patients can now purchase 7.5 milligram and 10 milligram vials of Zepbound for $499 monthly via the LillyDirect website. This is nearly 23% cheaper than the auto-injectors costing $650, which are often not covered by insurance. Eli Lilly's president, Patrik Jonsson, noted that over 10% of patients have begun using the vial format since its launch.
The drugmaker's new offering seeks to address investor concerns about sales and compete more effectively with Novo Nordisk's Wegovy. Despite this, shortages have prompted use of cheaper compounded drugs. The FDA recently removed Zepbound from its shortage list, causing legal issues for compounders. Eli Lilly mandates that patients refill prescriptions within 45 days to maintain discounted pricing.
