An 18-year-old girl named Sree Nanda from Thalassery tragically passed away due to complications from anorexia, a severe eating disorder. She was receiving treatment at the Thalassery Co-operative Hospital but failed to recover after months of extreme dietary restriction, reportedly surviving only on water.
Dr. Nagesh Manohar Prabhu, a consultant physician at the hospital, disclosed that Sree was admitted around 12 days before her death. Upon arrival, her condition was critical; she weighed just 24 kilograms and had to be placed on ventilator support due to low sugar levels and blood pressure.
Doctors explained that anorexia causes individuals to become fixated on their weight and food intake, often leading to dangerous levels of malnutrition. Despite weighing far below healthy standards, Sree perceived herself as overweight and abstained from eating. Her family and health professionals had urged psychiatric intervention, recognizing her deteriorating mental and physical condition.
Prior hospitalizations, including one at Kozhikode Medical College, suggested the dire need for immediate nutritional and psychological support, but Sree's situation worsened rapidly, culminating in her recent hospital admission following severe drops in blood sugar and respiratory challenges.
This case underscores the devastating impacts of anorexia nervosa, a disorder that affects numerous individuals and involves dangerous habits such as restrictive dieting and purging, driven by concerns about weight, body image, and self-worth.
