Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Ministry of Commerce and Industry Secretary Sunil Barthwal provided a comprehensive briefing to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs. Under the leadership of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, the committee tackled pivotal issues regarding India's foreign policy and global trade interactions.
In particular, the focus was on diplomatic relations with China, especially concerning the Brahmaputra river dam discussions. Secretary Misri noted the absence of a formal water agreement with China, unlike the existing accord with Pakistan, indicating that issues would be addressed bilaterally.
On trade discussions with the United States, Secretary Barthwal clarified that, contrary to media speculations, the US has not officially announced tariffs on Indian imports. The ongoing negotiations aim for mutually favorable trade agreements, safeguarding essential industries while strengthening US-India relations.
