Mumbai's session court on Tuesday accorded anticipatory bail to Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi. This comes in the wake of his contentious comments regarding Aurangzeb made in Maharashtra's legislative assembly, which have led to legal action.

The court has set Azmi's bail at a solvent surety bond of Rs 20,000. It has instructed him to present himself to investigators on March 12, 13, and 15, while emphasizing that evidence must remain untampered.

Azmi, seeking to counter media portrayals, has asserted that his statement was misrepresented, leading to unwarranted maligning. He contends that his remarks were based on historical facts rather than religious bias, and maintains that he respects historical figures Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
