The Maharashtra government has sanctioned Rs 13.46 crore for the construction of a memorial dedicated to Ashok Chakra awardee Tukaram Omble, a hero of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. This memorial is to be erected in his native village, Kedambe, located in Satara district.
The funds have been allocated following a government decision, as detailed by the Rural Development Department's order issued on March 28, 2025. "In accordance with government decision number Smarak-2022/P.No.131/Yojana-11, an administrative approval of Rs 13,46,34,201 has been granted for the construction of the memorial for Ashok Chakra awardee Shaheed Tukaram Omble at his birthplace, Mauje Kedambe, Jaoli, District Satara," the order stated.
Part of the "Establishment of Memorials for Great Personalities in Rural Areas" scheme, the project will see 20% of the sanctioned amount, equating to Rs 2.7 crore, released for the 2024-25 fiscal year to commence construction. Omble, a sub-inspector with the Mumbai Police, was posthumously honored with the Ashok Chakra for his gallantry in capturing terrorist Ajmal Kasab alive, despite sacrificing his life.
Meanwhile, Tahawwur Rana, accused in the 26/11 attacks, has approached the US Supreme Court seeking to halt his extradition to India. Following Justice Elena Kagan's rejection of his petition, Rana has renewed his emergency application, which is scheduled for conference deliberation on April 4, 2025.
