The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an extensive evaluation campaign focused on fortifying safety protocols within the aviation sector, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Civil Aviation. On June 19, DGCA issued an order that set this process into motion, targeting crucial safety components at major airports such as Delhi and Mumbai.
The inspection, led by teams under the Joint Director General of DGCA, took place during night and early morning hours to evaluate critical areas like flight operations, aircraft maintenance, air traffic systems, and pre-flight medical checks. Ground activities and aircraft movements were scrutinized to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and to pinpoint areas in need of improvement.
Disturbing findings emerged during these inspections, including repeated, unresolved defects in aircraft, unserviceable ground handling equipment, and non-adherence to maintenance protocols. Further inspection highlighted infrastructure issues at airports such as faded runway markings and outdated data hindering safety measures. Operators have been given a seven-day window to address these findings as part of the ongoing surveillance strategy in line with the DGCA's directives.
