Centre's Multi-Pronged Strategy Yields Results Against Left-Wing Extremism in Jharkhand

The Ministry of Home Affairs has identified Jharkhand's Latehar and West Singhbhum districts as affected by Left-Wing Extremism. The Centre allocated Rs 936.50 crore over five years for infrastructure and development under three major schemes. A decline in extremist violence is linked to consistent government efforts and the implementation of the 2015 National Policy and Action Plan.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has highlighted Jharkhand's Latehar and West Singhbhum districts as major areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism (LWE). With a commitment to addressing these challenges, the Centre has disbursed Rs 936.50 crore across significant initiatives, enhancing infrastructure and fostering development in these volatile regions. The funds have been channelled through the Security Related Expenditure Scheme, the Special Central Assistance Scheme, and the Special Infrastructure Scheme.

Among the government's efforts are expansive infrastructure projects, with the construction of 2,927 km of roads, installation of 1,589 mobile towers, and establishment of various financial institutions including 349 bank branches and 352 ATMs. Moreover, educational initiatives in tribal areas have witnessed the operationalization of 47 Eklavya Model Residential Schools and numerous skill development centers, including 16 Industrial Training Institutes.

Monitoring mechanisms are in place to ensure effective deployment of resources via central-level committees, such as the SRE Standing Committee. A noted decline in LWE violence, achieved through the National Policy and Action Plan 2015, underscores a significant contraction in affected areas. Fewer districts are now cited as LWE-impacted, with a marked 81% drop in extremist incidents since 2010.
