A 19-year-old man from Garden Reach, South 24 Parganas, was arrested by Kolkata Police on suspicions of raping a minor girl he was reportedly involved with, officials disclosed on Wednesday. The assault allegedly led to the girl's pregnancy. The arrest occurred on October 13, at around 2 a.m. outside the suspect's residence.
The case initially surfaced on September 28 when the girl's father emailed a complaint to South Port Police Station, alleging the 19-year-old had sexually assaulted his 15-year-old daughter multiple times. This prompted police to file an FIR under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Section 64(2)(m) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A formal complaint followed at the police station.
The accused has been presented in court as authorities continue their investigation. This case arises amid public outcry triggered by another troubling incident on October 10, where a medical student was allegedly gang-raped in Durgapur. Massive protests have erupted, with political parties exchanging blame over women's safety in the region. The West Bengal Police arrested five suspects in the Durgapur case, presenting them in court on Monday. (ANI)
