Police Commemoration Day was solemnly observed on Tuesday at the Sector 17 ground, near the local police station. The event featured a ceremonial parade honoring the brave police personnel who laid down their lives while focusing on their duty. Participating contingents included three from the UT Police and one from Punjab Police.
Floral tributes were paid by high-ranking officials, including Director General of Police Dr. Sagar Preet Hooda, SSP (Traffic and Security) Sumer Pratap Singh, SSP (UT) Kanwardeep Kaur, and other senior officers at the Police Martyrs' Memorial. DGP Dr. Hooda read the names of officers who made the ultimate sacrifice nationwide in the past year, followed by a two-minute silence observed by all officers and personnel in their memory.
DGP Hooda recounted the origins of this commemoration, recalling October 21, 1959, when Chinese troops ambushed an Indian police patrol in Ladakh, resulting in the martyrdom of 10 CRPF personnel. October 21 has since been designated as Police Commemoration Day to honor such supreme sacrifices across Central Police Organizations and State Police Forces. Among this year's honored were Inspector Jagjit Singh, ASI Lalu Ram, ASI Amarjit Singh, and others who were remembered for their valor and dedication to duty.
The ceremony also highlighted the heroism of Inspector Jagjit Singh, who joined Chandigarh Police in 1972 and perished while neutralizing terrorists during a raid in 1988. ASI Lalu Ram and ASI Amin Chand, who gave their lives during a terrorist attack in 1991, were also remembered. SI Amarjit Singh, who was martyred in 1992 during a convoy assault, and the courage of ASI Amarjit Singh, who died in 1989 fighting armed assailants, were also highlighted.
Inspector Sucha Singh's ultimate sacrifice while performing duty in 2013 was remembered, along with Head Constable Sukhjinder Singh, Constable Sukhdarshan, and Home Guard Volunteer Rajesh Kumar, who lost their lives in road accidents while fulfilling their duties. SSP UT Chandigarh Kanwardeep Kaur expressed the collective pride and grief of the Chandigarh Police, extending support to the martyrs' families through various schemes. The event concluded with a wreath-laying ceremony, a salute to the martyrs, and the national anthem.
