Delhi's Electric Heater Initiative: A New Front in the War Against Pollution

In an effort to combat rising air pollution, the Delhi Government plans to distribute 10,000 electric heaters to reduce reliance on coal and wood, major pollution sources. Despite slight AQI improvements, areas still face poor air quality. Authorities are setting measures, including construction limitations and allowances for affected workers.

In a bid to address the escalating air pollution crisis, the Delhi Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, announced the distribution of 10,000 electric heaters to Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) throughout the capital.

This initiative seeks to curtail the city's dependence on coal and wood for heating, identified as significant contributors to pollution. Gupta emphasized engaging RWAs to ensure widespread adoption and encouraged residents to reduce wood burning.

Despite a marginal improvement in the Air Quality Index (AQI), Delhi remains engulfed in 'very poor' air conditions, prompting judicial interventions such as the Delhi High Court's decision to cancel outdoor sports events to protect children's health.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court mandated subsistence allowances for construction workers affected by the ongoing environmental regulations under Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). These measures, in place since November 11, aim to mitigate emissions through tighter restrictions on construction and industrial activities.
