In a landmark development for India's coal gasification goals, Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd (BCGCL) and Coal India's subsidiary MCL have signed a pivotal land leasing agreement. This pact concerns the proposed coal-to-2,000 tonnes per day ammonium nitrate project in Odisha.

Dubbed as one of India's pioneering initiatives in coal gasification, the project underscores a move towards self-reliance in energy and chemical technology, leveraging domestic expertise from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). The coal ministry described it as a significant step forward in reducing dependence on foreign technologies.

Spanning approximately 350 acres owned by Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd, the project is backed by recent reforms from the Ministry of Coal. These policy shifts aim to use coal-rich areas for gasification projects, thereby opening new avenues for utilizing India's abundant coal resources and diversifying the sector.
