India has been invited to chair the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), marking a historic achievement in the country's democratic journey, according to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The invitation reflects global recognition of India's free, fair, and transparent electoral process. The organization, which consists of 37 democratic nations, has never before extended this honor to India.

Gyanesh Kumar will officially assume the position on December 3, 2025, in Stockholm, Sweden, as noted in an official statement. The international body, established in 1995, includes 35 member countries, alongside the United States and Japan as observers. India has played a pivotal role as a founding member, actively participating in governance, electoral research, and capacity-building initiatives.

As the world's largest democracy with over 900 million electors, India's leadership will bring valuable experience in electoral administration. The country accounts for the largest share of registered electors among International IDEA members, with 991 million voters, highlighting its crucial role ahead of its chairship in 2026.
