Gaurav Gogoi, a Congress MP and the Deputy Leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha, has called on External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Zubeen Garg, a renowned Assamese singer in Singapore. The event unfolded this September while Garg was slated to perform at the North East India Festival 2025, organized with support from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Gogoi referenced comments made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a state Assembly session on November 24, in which he claimed that an ongoing Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry suggested Zubeen Garg's demise was a murder. The Chief Minister added that multiple arrests had been made and cited the alleged crime as premeditated. Notably, Gogoi highlighted that one suspect in the investigation had direct ties with the festival's organization, having received significant funding from the MEA for similar events.
Describing the potential connection between an MEA-linked festival organizer and a murder suspect as alarming, Gogoi pressed for official clarification. He criticized the decision to go ahead with the North East India Festival in Singapore despite Garg's sudden death. Given Zubeen Garg's prominence, Gogoi argued that cancelling or postponing the event would have been more appropriate. He called on the MEA to publicly address the Chief Minister's allegations and clarify the suspected affiliations, underscoring that transparency and justice are owed to Garg's family and the people of the Northeast.
