Meghalaya's Infrastructure Boom: A Financial Windfall in 2026-27

Meghalaya is set to receive Rs 9,631 crore for tax devolution in 2026-27, boosting fiscal capacity for infrastructure and development. Central transfers and interest-free loans have enhanced capital projects, including highway construction. Additionally, welfare schemes have expanded, with significant loan disbursements and new Jan Dhan accounts opened.

Meghalaya is poised for a financial windfall, receiving Rs 9,631 crore in tax devolution for 2026-27. This allocation, as detailed in the Union Budget by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, is expected to significantly enhance the state's capital expenditure capability.

State officials have noted a steady increase in central financial support over the last decade, with the cumulative assistance reaching Rs 69,339 crore in tax devolution and Rs 40,452 crore in grants-in-aid between 2014 and 2024. These funds are part of a broader strategy to bolster regional infrastructure development, including the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), which provides 50-year interest-free loans.

The financial aid has accelerated infrastructure projects such as highways, with over 1,156 km constructed and more in the pipeline under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. Additionally, social welfare schemes have expanded their reach, evidenced by the opening of over 8.98 lakh Jan Dhan accounts and significant loan distributions under the PM Mudra Yojana.
